The Door After Hex

With Insertion #6: Hex, the Substack serialisation of Soulwaves: Insertions has reached a natural threshold, a pause point and a little redirection.

Hex is the story of how words got power. It explores the move from pictorial marks to syllabic language, from image to sound, from symbol to incantation. In other words, it is a tale about the moment language stopped merely describing the world and began to shape it.

That feels like the right place to pause.

Soulwaves: Insertions is both prequel and sequel to Soulwaves: A Future History. The stories reach back into pre-pre-history, forward into possible futures, and sideways into the Void where the Councillors quietly nudge events in the Density. They are entirely fictitious, of course. They are also laced with threads of universal truth, conjecture, number, myth and cosmic absurdity.

The first six Insertions have opened the door.

The remaining six take us further, as a new door opened for me that I wasn’t expecting.

After Hex come Septima, Octavious, Noma, Io, Elveland and The Duadex. These stories explore the origins of the known universe, the far future after the events of Soulwaves, the significance of the number 9, planetary communication, the Underworld and Elementals, and finally the loop that both closes this anthology and opens the way into the next book.

So this is not the end of the serialisation.

It is the moment the serialisation becomes a journey.
